
Cross-border bearing procurement becomes confusing when an old drawing uses DIN language, a Japanese catalogue uses JIS terminology, or a North American machine uses inch dimensions. Standards can provide common vocabulary, but the replacement still needs to match the physical joint and the ordered construction.
ISO 12240
ISO 12240 provides the international framework for spherical plain bearings and rod ends, including radial, angular-contact, thrust and rod-end categories. GE-style metric radial bearings are commonly discussed with ISO 12240-1 terminology.
DIN and German drawings
German documentation often uses DIN ISO language and older equipment may still contain historical DIN references. When a legacy drawing is involved, use the drawing dimensions and revision rather than assuming the current ISO-style designation is a direct one-to-one replacement.
JIS and Japanese procurement
Japanese buyers may encounter JIS references alongside IKO, NTN and other domestic brand designations. Model names can look familiar, but suffix, tolerance, rating and documentation expectations should still be verified for the exact part.
ANSI / ABMA and inch-series equipment
North American equipment can use inch-based spherical bearing series that are not dimensionally identical to metric GE products. Converting the nominal bore from inches to millimetres is not enough; outside diameter, widths, shoulders and rating system must all be checked.

How to handle a cross-standard RFQ
- Send the old designation exactly as marked.
- State whether the drawing is metric or inch-based.
- Provide d / D / B / C and shoulder geometry when possible.
- List the standard or drawing revision that controls the purchase.
- Use cross-reference tables only as the start of dimensional verification.
Unit conversion is not dimensional conversion
A 1 inch bore converts numerically to 25.4 mm, but that does not mean the nearest 25 mm metric bearing can replace an inch-series product. The outside diameter, widths, corner radii, shoulders and tolerances may all differ. Cross-standard work should compare the complete interface, not only convert the bore.
Legacy drawings deserve special care
An old DIN or machine-specific drawing may use a designation that has since changed. Instead of rewriting the old code from memory, keep the original drawing reference and compare it with the current candidate part. If the machine has already been repaired with another brand, record that history because it may explain why the installed part differs from the original parts list.
Which document should control?
For an OEM or controlled machine, the approved engineering drawing and purchase specification usually contain the actual dimensions and requirements that matter. A catalogue standard is a useful reference but should not override a project-specific drawing without engineering approval.

- Original standard/designation and brand.
- Metric or inch drawing dimensions.
- Actual measured replacement dimensions.
- Required fit/tolerance notes.
- Material/liner/seal construction.
- Any governing customer or OEM specification.
