
Understanding the manufacturing route helps a buyer ask better questions about material, heat treatment, spherical geometry, liner installation and inspection. The sequence below describes a typical production logic for steel spherical plain bearings; the exact process plan should be confirmed for the ordered series and supplier.
Typical manufacturing sequence
Material selection and incoming inspection
Bearing steel or another specified material is received and checked against the order specification. For controlled work, the material record and heat/lot traceability requirements should be defined early.
Blank forming and rough machining
Ring blanks are forged or otherwise formed, then rough-turned to establish the bore, outside diameter, widths and machining stock.
Heat treatment
Steel rings are heat treated to develop the required hardness and strength. Process control is important because distortion can affect the spherical geometry and later grinding allowance.
Precision grinding and finishing
The inner-ring sphere and mating outer-ring surface are finished to the required geometry, surface condition and clearance relationship.
Liner or bronze interface installation
Maintenance-free GE..C / GE..ET and PB families require a PTFE composite, PTFE fabric or bronze sliding interface instead of a conventional steel/steel contact.
Surface treatment and sealing
Depending on series, phosphate treatment, chromium-plated spherical surfaces and 2RS seals are added as part of the construction.
Inspection
Boundary dimensions, surface condition, articulation, clearance and other order-specific characteristics are checked against the applicable drawing or specification.
Packing and identification
The bearing is protected for storage/shipment and marked or labeled so model, lot and order information remain identifiable.
What buyers should ask about
- Which material and heat-treatment specification applies to the ordered series?
- How are d, D, B, C and spherical geometry inspected?
- How is the liner or bronze interface controlled on maintenance-free or PB products?
- Which inspection or material records can be supplied for the order?
- How are model, batch and packaging labels controlled for repeat orders?
Manufacturing changes with the sliding system
A steel/steel GE bearing and a PTFE-lined GE..C bearing can share similar boundary dimensions but diverge during finishing and assembly. The steel/steel part relies on the finished metal spherical contact and lubrication features. The GE..C family requires liner placement and pressing around the inner ring. PB requires a bronze interface. GE..ET 2RS adds a fabric liner and seals.
Quality gates should follow the design risk
Incoming material checks, heat-treatment verification, dimensional inspection, liner inspection and final appearance each address different failure risks. A buyer does not need every possible inspection report on every order, but the critical characteristics should be identified before production. Safety-critical or controlled projects may require a much more formal inspection plan.

- How are material lots identified and separated?
- Which dimensions are measured at final inspection?
- How is spherical geometry or clearance controlled?
- How are liners bonded/installed and inspected?
- How are 2RS seals installed without damage?
- How are nonconforming parts controlled?
- Which records can be linked to the shipped lot?
Repeatability matters more than a factory tour photo
For an industrial buyer, repeatable dimensions, controlled materials and traceable order identity are more useful than generic manufacturing imagery. When evaluating a supplier, ask how the same approved configuration will be reproduced on the next order and which revision controls that repeat supply.
