
A good spherical plain bearing selection starts with the joint, not the catalogue code. The six-step process below moves from load and pin size to motion, maintenance, sealing and the governing interface so that the final series choice can be checked against the actual machine.

Define the load path
Identify radial, combined and shock loads, and note whether the joint carries its highest load while moving or almost stationary. Use the machine design basis to decide what service factor is appropriate.
Set the bore from the pin
Use the actual pin or drawing to define d. On worn equipment, measure the least-damaged area and inspect whether the pin itself should be replaced.
Describe the motion
Record articulation angle, oscillation frequency and reversals. A spherical plain bearing is normally selected for pivoting or oscillating motion rather than sustained high-speed rotation.
Choose the maintenance strategy
Use greaseable GE/GEG or PB families when lubrication access is dependable. Consider lined maintenance-free GE..C or GE..ET 2RS when routine relubrication is not part of the machine plan.
Decide how sealing should work
For dust, splash or exposed bearing faces, compare 2RS versions. Seals help at the faces, but the surrounding joint must still control contamination and corrosion.
Verify the envelope and documents
Confirm D, B, C, shoulder clearances, fit classes, materials and any drawing or inspection documents before release.

Common selection mistakes
- Choosing from bore diameter without checking D, B and C.
- Treating a cross-reference designation as automatic interchange approval.
- Ignoring the maintenance route in a greaseable series.
- Using a sealed bearing without addressing water or abrasive contamination around the pin and housing.
- Applying one generic fit to every load direction and housing stiffness.
A simple selection example
Suppose an existing machine uses a 30 mm pin in an exposed outdoor pivot. The first decision is not whether GE30 or GEG30 has the higher rating. First confirm the available D and B in the bracket. Then determine the load and articulation. If the compact GE envelope fits the load but contamination is severe, GE30ES 2RS may be enough. If the joint needs the wider heavy-duty envelope, compare GEG30ES 2RS. If the joint cannot be greased reliably, the selection path changes again toward a maintenance-free liner.
Use Cr and C0r in context
Cr and C0r are published bearing ratings, but neither is a direct substitute for the machine design load. Static loading, oscillation, shock, service factor, lubrication and liner behavior all affect the real calculation. A good RFQ therefore gives the supplier both the bearing size and the duty instead of asking only for the highest load number.
Replacement work needs an extra step
When the bearing already failed, inspect the pin, housing and shoulders before choosing the same model again. A worn housing can change fit; a bent pin can create edge loading; blocked grease passages can destroy a new steel/steel bearing. Replacement is partly a root-cause exercise, not only a part-number exercise.
Selection data worth saving for future orders
- Approved part number and full suffix.
- Machine position and drawing revision.
- Pin/housing dimensions and fit.
- Lubricant or maintenance-free liner definition.
- Inspection or document requirements.
- Any approved cross-reference and the evidence used to accept it.
